5th Short Course, Hamburg, 2011

The 5th DGP Short Course for Young Parasitologists took place at the Bernhard-Nocht-Institute in Hamburg between 16-19 March 2011.
21 PhD Students from around Europe took part in the course, covering a wide range of topics and parasites. During the three days of the course the students were given the opportunity to present their own research topic, and also engage in scientific discourse with other student attendees and invited speakers.
As an inherent part of the short course, Dr. Freddy Frischknecht (University of Heidelberg) once again gave his extremely popular workshop on digital image analysis. In a two-part practical course supervised by PD Dr. Joachim Clos (BNI, Hamburg), the students carried out stage differentiation experiments on Leishmania. During the second day of the course, PD Dr. Jude Przyborski (Philipps University Marburg), presented his work about „Protein trafficking in the human malaria parasite“, this being followed by the workshop „Interaction of the malaria parasite with its host cell“, given by Dr. Tobias Spielmann (BNI Hamburg). Dr. Monica Hagedorn (BNI Hamburg) held the workshop „Investigation of host-pathogen interactions“. Following all the student talks, the attendees voted for the “best talk” prizes, and several lucky winners received a book prize.
It wasn’t all work though! As well as the popular “meet and greet drink session”, all attendees and invited speakers attended the course dinner at the Copper House restaurant, right opposite Hamburgs infamous Herbertstrasse. To round off the course, a somewhat chilly boat trip around the harbour allowed all attendees to say their final goodbyes to each other.
As in previous years, we were successful in attracting commercial sponsorship, with our partners Institutional Money, Nordea, Eurogentec Deutschland, ThermoFisher Scientific generously helping out. Last, but definitely not least, we wish to thank Prof. Dr. Heinz Mehlhorn, who financially sponsored our Talk Prize, and additionally donated a copy of his recent book. In addition, we wish to thank everyone at the BNI in Hamburg for their support. A particular thanks to Prof. Egbert Tannich!
The next Short Course will take place in 2012 in Heidelberg before the DGP conference. We look forward to seeing you there…
Breaking news: It appears that the Short Course now has it’s own Facebook page. Thanks to Nicole Kilian for that.

4th Short Course, Düsseldorf, 2010

The 4th DGP Short Course for Young Parasitologists took place at the Heinrich-Heine University, Düsseldorf between-16 13March 2010.
18 PhD Students from eight different cities attended the course, representing seven different groups of parasites and covering topics including ecology, genetics, immunology, evolution and cell biology.
Prof. Heinz Mehlhorn (Düsseldorf) took time off from his hectic „pre-conference“ schedule to give the students a general introduction to the „World of Parasitology“, filled with amusing anecdotes from his long and successful career. Looking at things from a slightly difrerent angle, Prof. Bill Martin (Düsseldorf) presented his evolutionary view of parasitism, and inititated an „interactive“ seminar which allowed all students to ask questions about pretty much anything related to evolution. Dr. Freddy Frischknecht (University of Heidelberg) was once again invited to give his extremely popular workshop on digital image analysis, which was enjoyed by all (me included!). Thanks to the efforts of Prof. Mehlhorn, the students where also able to gain a „behind the scenes“ look at this industrial side of parasitology research, with a half day visit to the animal health division of Bayer.
This year we were particularly successful in attracting sponsorship from industrial partners, and received generous support from Geneart (Regensburg), Qiagen (Düsseldorf) and Eurogentec Deutschland (Köln). In addition, we wish to thank the organizers in Düsseldorf, in particular PD Sven Klimpel and Patrick Unger for their continuous support! Although she could not attend the actual course, we are indebted to Simone Külzer (Uni Marburg) for her organizational skills “behind the scenes”.
Good news for all those not able to take part in the course this, or in previous years: The next course will take place, not in 2012, but already in 2011, more specifically 16-19th March at the Bernhard Nocht Institute in Hamburg! Looking forward to seeing you there…..
